You are at the Arturo Prat Pier, the town's door to Antarctica. For more than a century, polar expeditions have come and gone through this waterfront. Work on the pier began in 1920, and in 1948 President Gabriel González Videla came back to this shore from Antarctica: the first head of state anywhere to set foot there. Antarctic ships still take on supplies here before heading south. And since the end of 2025, cruise ships up to three hundred metres long can tie up right alongside.
