About seven kilometres north, on the coast road beside the Strait, a fleet sits out of its time. The Nao Victoria Museum, open since 2011, holds full-size replicas of historic ships, built with traditional shipwright's carpentry. The star is the Victoria, the only one of Magellan's five ships to complete the first voyage around the world: more than two hundred men sailed from Spain in 1519, and only eighteen came home, on her. Beside her are Shackleton's James Caird, Darwin's HMS Beagle and the schooner Ancud. The museum is made to be explored, not just looked at.
