You are at the Naval and Maritime Museum on Pedro Montt street, in the old Naval Command headquarters, built between 1908 and 1910. With sea charts, ship models and instruments, the Chilean Navy tells the story of the Strait, its lighthouses and its Antarctic voyages. Its great story: in August 1916 the little tug Yelcho, under pilot Luis Pardo, sailed from this port and rescued Shackleton's twenty-two men from Elephant Island. For centuries the Strait was the sheltered doorway between two oceans.
