About seven kilometres west, the city ends and the forest begins. The Magallanes National Reserve was created in 1932 to protect the basin of Lynch lagoon, which supplied the city's water; the rivers that rise here still do. Its trails run through southern beech forest, with views over the Strait. In 2023 two visitors filmed a huemul, the deer on Chile's coat of arms, on the Las Lengas trail: Conaf called it the first record in the reserve's ninety-one years. Buy your entry online at pasesparques.cl, leave pets at home, and bring a jacket: even in January it averages under twelve degrees.
