Documented The workers, not the owners
Germán Montero Carvallo's group was first carved in granite in 1944 and recast in bronze in 1962. It honours the men who worked the sheep stations of the pampa. Keep it in mind when you reach the wool barons' palaces downtown.

Documented The Unknown Indian
In 1929, after an attack on a marble mine on Diego de Almagro Island, an unidentified Indigenous man was found dead. He was buried here without a name. His bronze statue went up in 1969. Today his grave is covered in hundreds of candles and thank-you plaques.

People here say The gate that never opens
People here say Sara Braun asked that the portico's central doors never open again once her coffin had passed through, and that this is why you enter at the side. It is a good story, but the historian Mateo Martinic read her will and found nothing like it, so we tell it as legend.

Debunked “The southernmost city in the world”
You will hear it on the ship. It is not true: Ushuaia and Puerto Williams are both further south. What Punta Arenas really is: the largest city, and historically the main one, south of the 46th parallel.

Documented Kiss the toe
At the base of the 1920 Magellan monument sits an Aónikenk figure whose big toe shines gold from decades of hands and kisses. Touch it and — they say — you will come back to Punta Arenas. The custom is real; whether it works, you will know when you return.
