Climb to the Cerro de la Cruz lookout and catch your breath over the whole city. This was once the edge of town, the Hill of Sowings, where settlers are said to have grown oats and potatoes. In 1877 the garrison's artillerymen mutinied, people were killed, the young town burned, and hundreds hid in these hills. In 1881 a wooden cross went up here, and in 1897 the Salesian Maggiorino Borgatello blessed it: hence the name. Below you, coloured roofs tumble down to the Strait, and on a clear day Tierra del Fuego rises across the water.
